40 Days of
giving make a life worth living
Lent Event is a growing Uniting Church and
community movement aiming to alleviate world poverty by challenging
those of us who live in the first world to re-evaluate our
priorities and our use of God's resources. Lent Event was
established by West Epping Uniting Church in 2005. Since its
inception, this God-inspired program has touched the lives of
thousands, both in Australia and overseas.
The concept of Lent Event is a simple one.
In the 40 days leading up to Easter, we focus on communities
who have much less than we do, reflecting on the self-sacrificial
example of Jesus, who went as far as the cross in expressing his
love. To deepen our journey of discipleship, we give up an
item or two from our daily lifestyle and donate the money saved to
projects that provide practical solutions to
poverty.
Lent Event has had a transformational impact
on the lives of some of the world’s neediest people. In five
years, Lent Event has raised over $1.3 million for vital relief and
development work through UnitingWorld, Relief and Development.
We are currently working to provide clean water in PNG and
Sudan; education in South India; agricultural development in
Timor-Leste, health facilities in the Solomon Islands and support
for HIV/Aids orphans in Zambia. In addition to above
projects, Lent Event continues to support vital community
development projects in West Timor and
Zimbabwe.
Five hundred and twenty Uniting Church
communities across Australia currently undertake this Lenten
journey. The response from participants has been
overwhelmingly positive with groups reporting that they had grown
from the experience, been strengthened as a community and
appreciated the opportunity to make a lasting difference in our
world.
Lent Event is a wonderful opportunity to
express God’s love and compassion to the world's desperately poor,
to give them a future filled with hope. At the same time,
participants receive the blessing of a life lived more closely with
God.
